Ghana’s Youth Unemployment Crisis: A National Security Threat
The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi, has warned that the country’s escalating youth unemployment crisis poses a significant threat to national security and constitutes a moral emergency.
Speaking at the second National Forum of the Sahel Peace Initiative in Accra, Bishop Gyamfi emphasized the urgent need for bold action to address the widespread joblessness affecting Ghanaian youth.
“The high rate of youth unemployment in Ghana is not simply a development issue, it is a matter of national security, and, indeed, of moral urgency,” Bishop Gyamfi declared. He highlighted the silent emergencies in communities, including:
– Disaffected jobless graduates
– Rural youth drifting towards illicit economies
– Vulnerable minds being groomed by agents of extremism
Bishop Gyamfi’s statement serves as a call to action for stakeholders to address the youth unemployment crisis, which can have far-reaching consequences for the country’s stability and security.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference is urging policymakers to prioritize job creation and economic opportunities for Ghana’s youth.
