Ghana Police Service Arrests Suspect in Assault on JoyNews Journalist

The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the assault on JoyNews journalist, Latif Iddrisu, during a protest in Accra on May 27, 2025.

The suspect, identified as Theophilus Thompson, aged 55, was apprehended on June 7, 2025, at James Town.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the protest was staged by a group of individuals, including some members of parliament and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in front of the EOCO Office in Accra.

The demonstration was in protest against the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

During the protest, Latif Iddrisu, who was covering the event for JoyNews, was confronted and assaulted by some demonstrators.

The police have confirmed that Thompson is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.

The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that anyone who engages in acts of violence against media personnel or any member of the public is brought to justice.

The police are continuing their efforts to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident.
