GCBC Expresses Sorrow Over El-Wak Stadium Tragedy, Calls for Accountability

 

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the tragic incident at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, where a stampede occurred during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on November 12, 2025.

According to the GCBC, 34 casualties were recorded, with six confirmed dead, five in critical condition, and 12 in fairly critical condition.

The GCBC has united in prayer with the bereaved families and those affected, calling for the swift recovery of the injured.

The Bishops’ Conference has reiterated its commitment to promoting systems that respect human life, foster accountability, and advance the common good of the country.

They have prayed for the departed, consolation for the afflicted, and wisdom for those entrusted with the nation’s care.

The Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced an internal investigation into the incident. The GCBC’s statement emphasizes the need for justice, compassion, and healing in the response to the tragedy.
