EC’s U-Turn on Ablekuma North Election Results Sparks Controversy

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong disappointment over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) sudden reversal on the Ablekuma North election outcome. According to NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the EC had initially confirmed in writing and testimony before Parliament that only three polling stations were pending in the constituency.

Frimpong revealed that the NPP wrote to the EC on June 3 seeking clarity on the election status, and the response indicated that just three polling station results remained. However, the EC has now announced plans for a rerun in 19 polling stations, citing irregularities during the collation process.

The NPP has rejected the EC’s decision, describing it as inconsistent and damaging to the credibility of Ghana’s electoral process. Frimpong insisted that the party’s candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the election by a margin of 414 votes and would provide documented evidence to support the claim. “It’s a shame for this country,” Frimpong remarked, expressing concern over the integrity of the process.

The NPP has taken legal action to halt the EC’s plan for a rerun, filing an interlocutory injunction at the High Court. The party argues that the EC’s decision is unlawful and contradicts a January 4, 2025, High Court order directing the commission to collate and declare the outstanding results.

The EC has yet to respond to the NPP’s latest claims, and the rerun is scheduled for July 11, 2025. The outcome of the court case will determine the next steps in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election dispute.
