DCE Narrowly Escapes Mob Attack After Galamsey Pit Collapse
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, Umar Ahmed, narrowly escaped a mob attack in Akyem Wenchi after a galamsey pit collapse claimed the lives of four people, with several others still trapped.
The timely intervention of police personnel saved the DCE from the angry mob, who were furious over the incident. According to an eyewitness, Ibrahim Sanny, the DCE was ambushed on his way to Akwatia around 6:40 p.m. Police were forced to fire warning shots to disperse the agitated crowd before managing to rescue him.
The situation escalated when the DCE asked residents to help move two excavators to support the ongoing rescue effort.
However, this gesture was misinterpreted as an attempt to confiscate the machines, triggering a violent reaction from the locals. The irate crowd mounted a roadblock and pelted stones at the DCE as he ran to his car for safety.
The incident highlights the growing concerns over galamsey activities in the region, which have been linked to several deaths and environmental degradation.
The rescue efforts are ongoing, with several people still trapped under the rubble. The police have assured the public that they will continue to work to ensure the safe rescue.
