Clash Between Akroma Gold Mining Company Soldiers and Wisiwisi Community
A violent confrontation occurred between soldiers of Akroma Mining Company Ltd and the youth of Wisiwisi, a farming community in the Kwahu West Municipality.
The clash was sparked by allegations of illegal mining activities by the company, which the community claims is destroying their farmlands and water bodies.
During the confrontation, journalists covering the demonstration were attacked, and their equipment seized. Adom News correspondent Akwasi Dwamena had his camera confiscated, while a Republic FM reporter had their phone taken by the soldiers.
Scores of residents were physically assaulted by the military personnel, prompting widespread outrage. The community had staged the demonstration to protest the company’s alleged illegal mining activities.The incident has heightened tensions between the community and the mining company.
The presence of about 20 soldiers at the scene, who were beating residents mercilessly, has raised concerns about the company’s operations and the treatment of local residents.
