Cardinal Turkson: Africa’s Time for Pope May Be Near

Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson has expressed optimism about the possibility of an African being elected as the Pope, despite previous failed attempts.

In a recent interview, Cardinal Turkson emphasized that it’s not too late for an African to ascend to the papacy, highlighting the growing number of Catholics in Africa and the need for credible figures to represent the continent.

According to Cardinal Turkson, the rapid growth of the Catholic Church in Africa, with over 265 million Catholics and 7.27 million new adherents in just one year, presents an opportunity for Africa to produce a pope.

He noted that while Africa may be late in entering the “race” for a pope, it’s not too late to achieve this goal.

Cardinal Turkson stressed the importance of having credible figures in the subregion who can attract international attention and be considered for the papacy.

He expressed optimism about the possibility of an African pope, saying, “I pray for it every day.”
