Breaking News: Ministry of Education Abolishes Teacher Licensure Exams
The Ministry of Education has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to abolish the Teacher Licensure Examinations by August 30, 2025.
This decision was announced by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the new governing board of the NTC on July 15, 2025.
The ministry plans to introduce a new framework for assessing teacher qualifications, focusing on academic training and practical fieldwork rather than standardized exams.
This move aims to enhance the quality of education and better prepare educators for their roles.
Candidates who have previously failed the licensure exams will be given a final opportunity to retake them before the phase-out takes full effect.
The last Teacher Licensure Exams must be concluded by August 30, 2025, and any resit opportunities for unsuccessful candidates must also conclude by that date.
“The last of the Teacher Licensure Exams must be concluded not later than August 30. If there is a final opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not go beyond August 30,” emphasized Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
This directive sets the stage for a new era in teacher assessment, prioritizing academic preparation and practical teaching experience over standardized testing.
The National Teaching Council has been tasked with developing a comprehensive framework that emphasizes continuous professional development, in-school assessments, and practical training.
The abolition of Teacher Licensure Exams is part of broader reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in Ghana.
The Ministry of Education believes that this new approach will help produce more competent and effective teachers, ultimately benefiting students and the education sector as a whole.
