As the first phase of the Work Abroad Programme begins, hundreds of applicants in the Bono Region have been screened at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) regional office in Sunyani on September 3, 2025.

The initiative, championed by the NDC government through the YEA, aims to provide structured employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth while ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions.

Under the programme, YEA secures job opportunities and facilitates travel arrangements, while beneficiaries are responsible for the associated costs.

Mustapha Omar Copson, the Bono YEA director, in an interview with Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark FM hailed the ‘Work Abroad Programme, describing the programme as a transformative step towards tackling youth unemployment in the region and Ghana at large.

According to him, the programme will facilitate job placements for professionals, drivers, artisans, and skilled workers in various sectors, including hospitality and technical trades.

He said the programme, initiated by John Dramani Mahama, is targeted at bridging the gap between Ghana’s talented workforce and global demand for skilled and unskilled labour to create employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

The Bono YEA director urged the first batch of applicants who would be shortlisted to work abroad to exhibit good character, emphasizing that this would be crucial to ensuring the success of the initiative and upholding Ghana’s reputation.

Regina Abena Wireko Thompson, deputy director for the Work Abroad Programme, described the programme as a step towards promoting labour mobility and legal migration for Ghanaians

Regina Thompson stated that the registration requirements include a Ghana card, relevant certificates, proof of skill/trade certification/license, a passport, and a curriculum vitae.

She assured that the Work Abroad directorate under YEA will facilitate all necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth transition for every Ghanaian worker.

Regina Abena Wireko Thompson added that upon arrival, beneficiaries will be transported by Ghanaian embassies in the selected countries to their accommodation, receive additional training, and begin their employment.

According to her, Work Abroad Programme beneficiaries will be covered by a contract agreement subject to renewal.

Some applicants shared their expectations with the media expressing optimism for a smooth and successful process.
