Beyond Royalties: Otumfuo Urges Government to Develop Full Value Chain in Gold Mining

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the government and stakeholders in Ghana’s mining sector to shift their focus from mere royalty collection to maximizing the full value chain of mineral resources, particularly gold.

This call was made during a meeting with the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs on July 18, 2025.

Otumfuo emphasized the need to add value to raw minerals, promote local participation, and ensure equitable distribution of wealth generated from mining.

He urged government institutions to strengthen regulatory frameworks and insist on impactful investments from multinational mining companies

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Yusif Sulemana, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable mining practices.

He announced the rollout of a Cooperative Mining Scheme to empower local groups and formalize operations.

The Cooperative Mining Scheme aims to create jobs, reduce illegal mining, and promote responsible mining practices. Otumfuo’s leadership in this area was praised by the Deputy Minister, who recognized his role in setting a national example.
