Anomabo Old Palace Demolished by NADMO

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has demolished the historic Anomabo Old Palace in the Mfantseman municipality of Ghana’s Central Region. The decision to demolish the palace was made in line with NADMO’s efforts to prevent future disasters by removing weak and ancient structures.

According to Nana Baffour, the acting chief and Kontihene of the Anomabo Traditional Council, the palace was built by Nananom in the 18th century and had developed cracks and weaknesses over time, posing a risk to the community. Despite its historical significance, the council accepted NADMO’s proposal to demolish the palace after receiving a letter from the organization and the municipal assembly three years ago.

The Municipal NADMO Director, Christian Yankson, emphasized that it is NADMO’s duty to identify and demolish old and weak buildings to prevent disasters. “We added the Anomabo old palace to our list because it is not in a good state for the community, and therefore we must get it down,” he stated.

The Anomabo Traditional Council has already built a new palace, and leaders are expected to come together to plan the use of the land for the royal family and the community at large. The demolition of the old palace is part of NADMO’s broader efforts to address the growing issue of flooding and disasters in Ghana .

NADMO’s Director-General, Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, has emphasized the importance of restoring the natural flow of water bodies to avoid severe consequences for affected communities.

The organization has announced plans to demolish unauthorized structures and dredge critical water channels to mitigate flooding.
