Abofour Youth Demand 24-Hour Economy Market, Citing Neglect
The youth of Abofour and their opinion leaders are urging calling on the president of the republic of Ghana H.E.john Dramani Mahama, The minister of trade and industry The Ashanti Regional Minister Hon.Dr.Frank Amoakohene and then Hon. Frank Owusu Amoah, MCE for Offinso South, to establish a 24-hour economy market in Abofour.
They cite the market’s significance as the heart of all markets in the area and its substantial size, attracting over 50,000 people weekly.
“We, the youth, believe that a 24-hour economy market would bring much-needed jobs, opportunities, and development to our area, reducing hardship. We’re calling on all leaders, including the President, minister of trade and industry, our MCE hon Frank Owusu Amoah and Ashanti Regional Minister, to consider our plea,” the youth said.
Despite generating significant revenue for the assembly, Abofour lacks developmental projects. The youth highlighted poor infrastructure, including inadequate structures, poor lighting, insufficient security personnel, and lack of facilities like proper toilets and a car park.
“We pay taxes, but there’s no improvement in our market. It’s unfair that we’re contributing so much, yet our market is neglected. Enough is enough. Abofour market deserves better,” the youth lamented.
Abofour market is a major hub for trade, attracting people from Ghana and neighboring countries like Togo, Burkina Faso, and Cote d’Ivoire.
The market operates daily in various suburbs, but the main market day is Thursday, drawing people from across Ghana and beyond.
It’s one of the largest markets in Ghana, and its relocation in 2017 has improved safety and reduced traffic congestion.
The market is also a significant producer of maize and all kinds of foodstuffs with thousands of tonnes transported to various parts of the country and beyond, including Kumasi, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Obuasi, Accra, and even neighboring countries like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
The youth and opinion leaders are appealing to leaders to recognize the market’s potential and invest in its development.
They demand economic development and infrastructure investment in Abofour market, which would benefit the entire region.
