KMA Cracks Down on Commercial Vehicles Over Unapproved Fares

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken decisive action against commercial vehicle operators charging unapproved transport fares in the Ashanti Region. On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the KMA’s Taskforce impounded 22 vehicles within Kumasi’s Central Business District (CBD) for violating the newly reduced fare rates.

The seized vehicles were fined between GHS500 and GHS1,000, with repeat offenders warned of potential prosecution. This enforcement follows an agreement between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport to reduce transport fares by 15%, a decision made in response to public concerns over high transport costs.

Despite previous warnings, some drivers continued to charge passengers excessive fares, particularly during evening hours. Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of the KMA’s Transport Department, stated that the enforcement will persist until full compliance is achieved. He advised commuters to use approved transport stations and board vehicles displaying official KMA stickers.

Additionally, Mr. Wilson cautioned drivers against loading passengers at unauthorized points within the CBD, noting that violators risk a fine of up to GHS1,000 and possible arrest.

The KMA remains committed to protecting public interest by ensuring fairness in transport fare practices throughout the metropolis.
